The Senate may have passed a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” but it failed to pass the DREAM Act, and that’s “a cold, cold abomination,” writes Joe Klein of Time, calling the vote an act “of staggering cynicism and ugliness.” He reserves particular scorn for onetime supporters Orrin Hatch and John McCain, who voted against the bill. “One wonders why, especially in McCain’s case, given that he recently won reelection and doesn’t have to pretend to be a troglodyte anymore.”
McCain also voted to keep Don’t Ask, of course, despite public stands against it from his wife and daughter. “I used to know a different John McCain,” Klein writes. “The guy—a conservative, to be sure, but an honorable one—who refused to indulge the hateful strictures of his party’s extremists.” The 2008 election defeat changed all that. “He’s a bitter man now,” who “has made quite a show of demonstrating his petulance and lack of grace. What a guy.” (More John McCain stories.)
