Nigeria has indicted former vice president Dick Cheney and several other executives in a bribery case dating back to Cheney's time in charge of Halliburton. Prosecutors from Nigeria's anti-corruption unit allege that Halliburton and other firms paid $180 million in bribes to win a $6 billion contract for a natural gas plant, Bloomberg reports. Former Halliburton subsidiary KBR pleaded guilty last year to federal charges in the US over the bribes.
Halliburton denies it was involved in the project and Cheney's lawyers reject the allegations. "The Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission investigated that joint venture extensively and found no suggestion of any impropriety by Dick Cheney in his role of CEO of Halliburton," a lawyer for Cheney told AP. "Any suggestion of misconduct on his part, made now, years later, is entirely baseless." (More Dick Cheney stories.)
