Helen Thomas Award Scrapped Over 'Zionist' Remarks

Helen Thomas' alma mater, faced with the veteran journalist's latest controversial remarks about Jews, has decided to scrap the award it gave out in her honor. Wayne State University is going to stop handing out the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity in the Media Award, which had been given to journalism standouts for more than a decade, CNN reports.

Thomas—who graduated from Wayne State in 1942—told a diversity conference last week that "Congress, the White House and Hollywood, Wall Street are owned by the Zionists," drawing swift condemnation from Jewish groups. The award, which was created to honor work that promotes diversity, "is no longer helping us achieve our goals," an interim dean at Wayne State tells the Detroit Free Press.
