More than 1 out of every 3 South African men admitted to rape in a recent survey, and 3 of every 4 said they had been violent with a woman. More than a quarter of the women surveyed said they had been raped, reports the Guardian. The survey also found that 32% of men and women agreed that "in any rape case, one would have to question whether the victim is promiscuous." Violence against women is so prevalent in the nation that it's viewed as almost routine, one expert warned.
"What we see here is a set of attitudes reflecting men's views that they have legitimate reasons for use of violence against women, and women in many respects acquiescing to this," said a spokeswoman for the group that conducted the survey in Gauteng, the country's wealthiest province.
