The two young American hikers charged with entering Iran illegally will go on trial in February, officials have announced. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 28, were supposed to go on trial early this month with companion Sarah Shourd, but authorities decided instead to free Shourd because of health concerns. The men's attorney has been denied access to his clients to help him prepare their case. The judge in the case told him "you will meet them the day of the trial," lawyer Masoud Shafiei told AP.
Shroud, Bauer's fiancee, said the hikers, all Berkeley grads, inadvertently entered into Iran while they were exploring trails in northern Iraq. Iran has warned that it will seize Shroud's $500,000 bail if she fails to return for trial. The men have been held in jail for 478 days. "As long and heartbreaking as this ordeal has been, we never imagined that our sons' detention would reach this sad and painful milestone," said a statement from their moms.
