Republicans are leaning on at-risk or moderate Senate Democrats to help them pick apart the Democrats’ health care reform bill. Strategists tell Politico that they think they can sway Ben Nelson, Jim Webb, and Jon Tester, since all come from red-tinged states and face 2012 reelection campaigns. They also expect help from the newly-elected Joe Manchin, who campaigned on the promise to repeal “the bad parts of ObamaCare.”
“I agree with health reform,” Manchin said last week. “Do I agree with everything in this package? No. I’ve always tried to fix things.” In the House, Republicans could pass an outright repeal of health care if they wanted to, but since Democrats still control the Senate, it’ll be an uphill battle to make even modest modifications. One they seem likely to pull off: repealing the 1099 tax reporting requirement, which even President Obama said last week he’d be open to reevaluating. (More health care reform stories.)
