San Francisco Bans Happy Meals

Indulgences, begone! California voters last night rejected legal pot, and San Francisco just voted to do the same to McDonald's Happy Meals. The city's board of supervisors yesterday passed the ordinance with such a hefty majority—8-3—that it will survive a threatened veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The measure, which will likely be passed in a final vote next week, requires all commercial meals to meet nutritional guidelines if restaurants include a toy with the food purchase, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. One of the supervisors called the vote a "tremendous victory for our children's health." But the owner of 10 McDonald's franchises in the city responded: "The San Francisco Board of Supervisors just took the happy out of Happy Meals." (More San Francisco stories.)
