Legal Pot Goes Down in Flames

California voters rejected a cutting-edge measure that would have made it legal to grow, possess, and use up to an ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes. Prop. 19 was supported by young voters, the San Francisco Bay Area, state branches of the NAACP, and retired police chiefs, but slammed by both parties and law enforcement officials.

The feds also insisted no that matter what, they would continue to enforce anti-drug laws, notes AP. The measure would have allowed local governments to approve and regulate commercial pot farming operations and sales. Had the measure passed, it would have made California the first state in the nation to legalize pot. (More California stories.)
