NYPD officers are trying to determine who left a sack of military-grade explosives buried near a 19th-century vault in a city cemetery. The bag, containing 10 pounds of C4 explosive, was found more than a year ago by a caretaker ... who left it sitting by a fence; a volunteer touring the cemetery stumbled upon it on the weekend, the AP reports. It was left with the garbage until the volunteer had second thoughts and called police, prompting a huge response.
"We thought it was like a movie prop,” a board member at the New York City Marble Cemetery says. “It was sort of crumbly, the plastic was coming off. It clearly said explosive on it, but it had been outside for so long that the plastic was sort of delaminating.” Police say that there was no risk of the explosives going off because there was no detonator. Officers are searching the cemetery for more buried explosives and investigating whether there is any link between the explosives and the nearby Hells Angels clubhouse.
