South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu turns 79 today and is retiring from public life to spend more time with family and friends. In an interview with Time, he shares some of what he's learned: On good and evil, he's found "that in spite of all the horror of injustice and oppression, and the sense that those who perpetrate evil tend to appear invincible, the texture of our universe is one where there is no question at all but that good and laughter and justice will prevail."
He is certain in this belief that good will triumph because for him, "God is biased, in favor of the weak, of the despised." On ordination of women and the treatment of homosexuals by Christians: "Almost always you can bet your bottom dollar that God is going to be on the side of the one who is being clobbered. ... I would not be able to worship a God that was homophobic." For the full interview, click here. (More Desmond Tutu stories.)
