For 10 years, the Baseball Hall of Fame displayed a jersey supposedly worn by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson during the 1919 World Series—which he and his teammates infamously threw. Turns out the jersey, just like the Series, is a fake. It was pulled from display in 2008, and a memorabilia collector and blogger claimed it was counterfeit in August, but not until recently did a Hall spokesperson admit to the New York Post the jersey was fake.
The White Sox logo "contained acrylic [coloring] that was first created in 1941," the spokesperson says. The jersey is the latest collectible from Barry Halper's collection discovered to be fake—a diary supposedly belonging to Ty Cobb is one other such item, and a glove supposedly worn by Jackson is also under review. Halper died in 2005, after selling his entire collection in 1998 for about $28.8 million.
