US Issues Europe Alert
Police officers patrol through the crowd at the Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich, southern Germany, Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010. The Obama administration is warning Americans about potential terrorist threats in Europe and urging U.S. citizens to be extra vigilant when they're in public places such as tourist...   (Matthias Schrader)

The State Department formally issued a travel alert to Americans living and traveling in Europe today, urging them to be vigilant, particularly in crowded places. "Current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks," it said. The alert focused on "the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure." (More alert level stories.)
