Nicaragua's chief diplomat in New York was found dead with his throat slashed in his Bronx home yesterday. The body of Cesar Mercado, 34, was discovered when his driver arrived to pick him up for a meeting with Nicaraguan officials attending the United Nations General Assembly, CNN reports. No suspects have been identified and police are seeking a motive for the killing.
Police say Mercado, the head of Nicaragua's consulate in New York, had suffered deep wounds to his neck and stab wounds to his abdomen, according to the New York Times. Two knives and a large amount of blood were found in the apartment's sink. The apartment does not appear to have been ransacked, investigators say.
