Mullah Omar, the elusive supreme leader of the Afghan Taliban, says the US is losing the war in Afghanistan. “The victory of our Islamic nation over the invading infidels is now imminent,” he said in an address celebrating Eid al-Fitr, which the SITE Intelligence group passed to the AFP. He called on the US to withdraw, saying it “is in your interest, and in the interest of your people and the best option for regional stability.”
Omar’s words come amidst a new US offensive in Kandahar that is having mixed results. Though the Taliban’s flag no longer flies anywhere in Kandahar City as it did scant weeks ago, terror attacks and assassinations haven’t slowed, the New York Times reports. The US is trying to train a new Afghan police force, but the Times calls that a “work in progress,” noting that 10% to 20% of recruits don’t have rifles yet. “They get a police baton, and that’s it,” said a local police colonel. “Can you imagine coming here with a stick?” (More Mullah Omar stories.)
